Dr Louis Chan is a consultant dermatologist caring for adults and children across Melbourne's east and south-east. He is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and holds a medical degree and a Master of Public Health from Monash University.

Dr Chan began his career as a physiotherapist, then worked as a rural GP before completing his specialist training in dermatology. This path gives him a broad, practical view of how skin conditions affect daily life, and of the value of working closely with each patient's GP.

He treats the full range of skin conditions, with a particular interest in inflammatory skin disease, including severe eczema, psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa, and the modern biologic and targeted treatments that have transformed their care.

Dr Chan consults at The Dermatology Clinic in Mulgrave and Officer, Ishi Dermatology in Mitcham, and Camberwell Dermatology in Hawthorn East. He is also a consultant dermatologist at Alfred Health and Eastern Health. He teaches GPs and doctors in training, and writes regularly about skin health.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need a referral?

No. But you need a valid referral from your GP or another specialist to claim a Medicare rebate.

Do you see children?

Yes. I see babies, children and teenagers as well as adults.

What is the difference between a dermatologist and a skin cancer doctor?

A dermatologist is a specialist who has completed at least four years of specialist training after medical school, and is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists. Dermatologists treat all conditions of the skin, hair and nails, including skin cancer.

What are biologic treatments?

Biologics are modern injectable medicines that target specific parts of the immune system. They are used for moderate to severe psoriasis, eczema and hidradenitis suppurativa when creams and tablets are not enough.
